Comments about this property Excellent location for a quiet getaway. Food superb, staff very helpful and friendly but not intrusive. In the current climate they are managing COVID really well, room sanitised and sealed ready for our arrival, anything you require just leave a note for housekeeping. Even with the COVID restrictions it was still a welcome break, with a wonderful beach to walk on. Definitely going to return. |

Tips for other travellers The hotel is situated in a lovely bay, accessed by a single track road. Plenty of things to do in the area. If you are looking for peace and tranquility to recharge the batteries and be spoilt with wonderful food this is it. |

Tips for other travellers The walks out from the hotel are excellent but you do need stout walking boots. Threave Gardens, Castle Douglas are well worth a visit as is Castle Douglas itself. Kirkcudbright is great to visit. |

Comments about this property As ever, an enjoyable stay, being a good place to simply get away to a quiet location in an overall area which we enjoy. Just felt very sorry for you and the problems that the varying lockdown provisions have caused, some needless in relation to the hotel. |

Comments about this property Great welcome, very well organised re Covid. We felt very secure. Nice touches in room, like chocolates and fruit. Good option to not have housekeeping during our stay and fill a request in for any supplies if needed. Hotel has lovely country house feel in public rooms. Staff very courteous and helpful. Food was excellent, truly tasty and good choice on both nights. I like that the menu was left on table as we had to keep checking it to identify the lovely tastes in the meal. I would recommend a sea view room as well. Just what we wanted, a quiet getaway from it all. |
|||
Tips for other travellers Due to Scottish Covid rules, no alcohol can be served in hotel at present, but its not their fault. Local 5 mile circular walk, along coast from hotel to Rascarrel Bay is worth doing for views and variety of both scenery and bird life. |

Comments about this property Enjoyed the stay, hotel quite as expected from reviews etc so was not expecting Blackpool bling. Food was even better than expected, compliments to all the chefs. Not many places take such care over breakfast too, perfect eggs. Only place I have EVER been (and I have travelled a lot) where the cheese plate was worth eating – real skill. Did you used to have a small library and some board games? Removed for covid regulations? That would have been nice, we needed some guidebooks and wildlife guides. Thought you did the covid regulations well, taken seriously which not everywhere does. Thanks for changing our meal table, after I asked, it was my friends 60th birthday and it really touched her that we could have the lovely table in the window. In room 9, there was some noise from a water pipe in the night – some knocking sound as the pipe came under thermal stress I think. Might be worth having a look at that. Liked the room decor, very tasteful and newly done. Altogether, a really lovely stay. Staff friendly. |

Comments about this property Once again, we thoroughly enjoyed our 4-night stay in this haven of tranquillity. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the Covid-19 restrictions implemented efficiently but unobtrusively. The food was of excellent quality and the imaginative menu changed every day. We shall be back! |

Comments about this property After a 6 year break because we had been living in Spain, it was great to be back at Balcarry Bay. The service was superb and the food was delicious as always. We were a little anxious as this was our first holiday since lockdown but we felt very safe. With all the procedures and protocols in place we felt very confident. We would like to say a big thank you to both the owners and staff for all the hard work and extra efforts that were needed to keep everyone safe. |
|||
Tips for other travellers There’s lots to see around this area, beautiful scenic drives, lovely clifftop walks, lots of amazing castles and abbey’s which hopefully will be open again very soon. This time we visited the National Trust’s Threave Gardens great to spend the day wandering around. |

Tips for other travellers No need to eat out – eat at the hotel! Great varied menu each day and excellent wine list to choose from. Culzean Castle is a must although a couple of hours drive away and the coastal route along the Solway Firth also a must – plenty of walking opportunities and lovely villages. Would also recommend Sweetheart Abbey and a walk along the river Nith in Dumfries. |

Comments about this property Simply the best hotel we have ever paid to stay in. Comments about this property We had a most enjoyable stay at the Balcary Bay hotel. The staff were friendly and food excellent. We have never stayed in a hotel where a four course meal is standard for the evening meal! On this occasion we took our two dogs and stayed in one of the rooms with access to a small patio then onto the lawns and straight onto the beach. This was perfect for them and us! |
|||
Tips for other travellers If bringing dogs take on of the downstairs rooms with direct access to the lawns and beach. Good walking is had locally or we took the dogs to Brighouse Bay west of Kircudbright where there is a large open beach. Kircudbright is a great place to look around, see the local Stewarty museum and have a coffee in the James Irving pottery shop. |

Comments about this property Lovely hotel, loved the location, we had a room with a sea view. Excellent food and menu, all staff were friendly and gave excellent service. Very comfortable lounge area and lots of local information available. |
|||
Tips for other travellers The local walk around Balcary Point, that the hotel had copies of, was quite strenuous but worth the effort, we did the short one, amazing views. We went to many abbeys and castles in the local area, used a Discovery Pass we’d purchased in advance, well worth the money. The Galloway forest was close by and we saw red squirrels and many birds. We also went to the red kite feeding station at a local farm – was a photographers dream. |

Comments about this property Balcary Bay hotel is delightfully situated on the shore-line at Bacary Bay. The accommodation is excellent and the staff were welcoming and highly efficient. The meals were very good but perhaps some of the portions could be better in the dinner menu. |
|||
Tips for other travellers Balcary is near Kirkudbright which is an interesting town which clearly has a lively community and is recovering its status as a town for artists. The surrounding countryside is delightful rolling pasture and woodland and there are numerous opportunities for walking and birdwatching. |

Comments about this property We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The view from our room, with triple bay window was unsurpassed and it was wonderful to look out in all weathers and watch the changing skies and expansive sea view. The food was excellent and the chef took advantage of a wide range of local produce including some delicious fish dishes. Included coffee and petit fours in the lounge after dinner was a very nice touch. Our room was huge and the bathroom very well fitted. Bed and pillows were a little hard for my taste but that is a personal thing. Some outside seating would be good – I’m sure this appears later in the year but the odd bench overlooking the sea would be nice. Overall, good value considering the wonderful location and the quality of the food. |
|||
Tips for other travellers The circular walk from the hotel around the headland is wonderful. We sat and watched porpoises from the point. Many other lovely local walks including Rockcliffe National Trust path. |

Comments about this property On our first visit to Barlcary Bay we had a wonderful stay. Everything about the hotel was excellent. The food, the views, the staff and the rooms were very good. All members of staff were very helpful and friendly. This area of Scotland is often overlooked but has so many really interesting places to visit. We enjoyed our stay so much that we have booked another holiday there in July. Big thanks to Graham for looking after the guests so well. |

Comments about this property We very much enjoyed our stay. The flowers I asked for were excellent and the Presseco was chilled and ready to drink. The food was great and service attentive and friendly. The smallest criticism would be that the food came out very rapidly when it might have been good to have a short break between courses, otherwise our stay could not have been improved |

Comments about this property Wonderful location away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Tranquility, with great food and efficiency. A well run hotel that has many guests who return time after time. Don’t expect anything other than quietness and hospitality- or you will be disappointed! |
|||
Tips for other travellers Eat at the hotel – the food is delicious- or you will have miles to travel . . . and the food probably won’t be as good! Many historical places to visit in the area – Try walking to Threve Castle or visit the nearby gardens. Ospreys nest near to the castle in spring. Or, you could sit in the hotel and let time pass! Watch out for red squirrels in the area. |

Comments about this property We very much enjoyed our stay. The hotel was slightly old-fashioned in a good way, eg a dress code for dinner, very comfortable public rooms, a friendly atmosphere amongst other guests, not too large. The view was glorious, particularly from our ground floor room, and it was lovely to have the balcony, even though the weather was mixed. It was particularly good for us to be able to bring our 4 month old puppy, who was quite safe in the car in the car park. Excellent bath and shower facilities, my husband has a slight disability and he managed easily. We hope to return to spend more time exploring this beautiful part of Scotland. My 4 grade of facilities is just because some similar hotels might have a swimming pool. But this is not a criticism! |
|||
Tips for other travellers Beautiful countryside nearby, and lots of almost deserted beaches. We visited the newly re-furbished gallery in Kirkudbright which was excellent, staffed by helpful staf |

Comments about this property This was our third stay here and it never disappoints, decided to stay around the area this time instead of driving everywhere. The area is lovely with plenty of nice places within a few miles. the hotels location is amazing and so relaxing, just what we needed. the shore opposite the hotel is great and ideal for taking our dog for a walk (he loves balcarry bay now) breakfast and dinner were top notch as always and made even better by the very friendly and courteous staff. we hope to return soon. thank you |

Comments about this property The staff are a credit to this establishment, friendly and efficient and exceling in there work. Our room was spacious clean and comfortable with the stunning views which give Balcary Bay Hotel its unique advantage. A lovely stay. |
|||
Tips for other travellers Come here for a restful break to enjoy the lovely location and the food. There are plenty of interesting places to visit and great walking to be had locally.On our visit the guest demographic was certainly of a senior age so its fairly formal and quiet. In our late fifties ourselves and wanting a quiet relaxed break this was no problem.The hotel is in a beautiful but slightly remote location, almost on the unspoilt beach with stunning views and lovely peaceful garden space.There is nothing much else around in the way of eating and drinking within walking distance however the food at Balcary was varied and excellent, beyond my expectations, and on a three night break I wouldn’t have wanted to go anywhere else. |

Comments about this property Stayed for the third successive year for our wedding anniversary – cant say enough great things really; just a pity its not on my doorstep, or I’d be there far more often. Food is fantastic and the location is astonishing and the staff could not be more helpful in all ways – our thanks to Greame and his team. |

Comments about this property we had a wonderful 2 day break and it really exceeded our expectations. Comments about this property Obvious high standards throughout our stay. Food absolutely excellent. One change I’d make is the coffee; I suppose for me it’s a personal preference. Staff warm and friendly. Room service excellent. WiFi worked in our room. Good to be able to start on a walk ,either on beach (if tide’s ok) or countryside. Other guests quiet but friendly when conversation is taken up. |

Tips for other travellers A new cafe in kirkudbright is excellent – The Station Cafe (on the A711 just past the main cross road) – for coffee, snacks or lunch Ellenbank (Elizabeth MacGregor) Nursery in the town is a very worthwhile visit as always Otters spotted off Balcary Cliffs For a short walk – the footpath out to Torr Point, just past Auchencairn towards Dalbeattie, is good |

Comments about this property We live in an unpredictable world which seems to become more unpredictable by the week. Fortunately there is nothing unpredictable about the Balcary Bay Hotel, the standards in every department are consistantly excellent. When I book, I know it will be exactly the same as last time, and this observation is based on about 12 visits. First impressions are always important, and the external appearance of the hotel and garden when pulling into the drive clearly shows that the owner sets high standards. The same high standards continue indoors, I have never seen another hotel where the standards of housekeeping and general decor are as good. And it would take a difficult customer indeed to find fault with the restaurant and waiting staff. Don’t miss this hotel, it is a gem. |

Tips for other travellers No one needs to go to a local retaurant here, take advantage of the excellent retauant in the hotel. There are a number of interesting buildings to see, nearby is Dundrennan Abbey from where Mary Queen of Scots left Scotland for the last time. The nearby stony beach is where she embarked on a boat to cross the Solway Firth, but the short walk is for the more agile. A little further away is Sweetheart Abbey, and a jouney here takes the visitor close to Kippford and Rockcliffe. Both of these small villages are very scenic. Additionally there are numerous walks in the area, the hotel sells a good book listing a selection of these. |

A perfect location to relax,pity about the weather but hardly noticeable because of the opportunity to enjoy the hotel itself. The food at Balcary was excellent and the menu changed each day. We will look forward to a visit in the future. |

Comments about this property Apart from the location everything about the Balcary bay hotel is excellent. The staff are all pleasant and helpful. The food is also well prepared and served. The choices are interesting as well as cooked just right; certainly for my taste. We stayed in one of the downstairs rooms and enjoyed everything about it. The mirrored windows are an excellent idea giving privacy as well as maintaining the view. |

Tips for other travellers We only stayed two nights so we didn’t sample much of the surroundings. But we did visit some of the interesting ruins, e.g. the local abbey. |

Comments about this property Wonderful room on the first floor with magnificent views. every morsel of food was excellent and complimented by a well chosen selection of wines. fabulous breakfast whichever choice you make. Arbroath Smokey and full Scottish were my favourites (separate days of course). |
|||
Tips for other travellers Kippford, Rockcliffe, Sandy Hills all worth a visit. Dumfries is nice down by the river but not much to shout about otherwise. A walk around Balcary point is rewarding but wear strong shoes as the path is rough in places. Gatehouse of fleet has a busy and good café in the centre. |

Comments about this property We chose Balcary Bay as an overnight stop en route back from a stay to Edinburgh to catch a ferry at Stranraer. It wasn’t really enough time to savour the peaceful and scenic ambience of this remarkable location. The sunset and dawn alone were memorable, and the tranquillity of the whole experience was quite special. We’d hope to make a longer stay in the future. |
|||
Tips for other travellers The walk through the woods to the cliffs is lovely – albeit a little muddy on our day. The peace, the birdsound, and lapping of the waves on the shore were the only sounds to be heard. We turned back from the cliffs after a short distance, not having boots, and one of us having had a knee joint replaced. Not ideal for such challenging going. But we got far enough to see the whole sweep of the Lake District mountains, as well as the Isle of Man. Quite a thrill. |

Comments about this property Just returned from a lovely relaxing break at Balcary Bay hotel. Loved everything about it! Wonderful views from lounge, dining room and many bedrooms. Right beside a perfect little secluded beach. All staff were delightful and couldn’t do enough to ensure that all their guests were enjoying their stay. The food was delicious. My husband and I enjoyed every dish we chose. Many guests had visited many times previously which speaks for itself. We certainly intend to return and have already recommended it to several friends. |

Comments about this property Staff were friendly and helpful. The standard of the food was excellent as was the comfort of our room. The decor is very tasteful. Comments about this property We stayed in room 10, deluxe double bay view, and it was just beautiful. The location was superb overlooking the bay and it was just stunning. Watching the stars at night was compelling. The food was delicious. The staff friendly and helpful. We were sorry to leave and will visit again. Thanks to all for making our short stay memorable. |

Tips for other travellers We spent a day in Rockcliffe beautiful little spot. The sun was shinning an added bonus. We did a few of the walking trails which was lovely and topped it all off with an ice cream cone. Magic |

Comments about this property A beautiful old fashioned hotel in a beautiful setting. Food and service absolutely first class. Room was spacious but cosy and lots of character. Sea view was breathtaking. There is not a lot more to the hotel (i.e. No spa or pool or anything like that) but don’t let that put you off. It’s just total relaxation from the minute you arrive. |

Tips for other travellers Kirkcudbright is well worth a visit. Cream of Galloway ice cream centre is good too, with walks around about nearby. The whole area is beautiful to drive through as well. |

Comments about this property My favourite place. Everything is excellent. I have recommended quite a few people to Balcary- I first came about 36 years ago and can remember playing snooker in a room downstairs under the dining room. Hope your staff are recovering well – I know it has been difficult but you were all brilliant under difficult circumstances. |

Tips for other travellers The hotel is ideally suited for us as we love peace and quiet and walking in the surrounding area. Kippford and Rockcliffe being particular favourites. If the weather is unfavourable there is plenty of history and culture on offer in surrounding towns, particularly Kircudbright. |

Comments about this property Very pleased with the facilities and staff and who were competent but also relaxed and friendly. The meal servings were just the right size. Often in other hotels we have been given serving sizes much larger than needed, especially if you have elected and paid for a four-course meal. So we we pleased that the staff recognised this without having to be told. |
|||
Tips for other travellers The coastal scenery is stunning, and the hotel is set above the shore, so the opportunity to walk along the shore is convenient. If you wish to do that remember to bring waterproof boots/shoes |

Comments about this property We were thrilled with Balcony Bay Hotel. The hotel itself is charming, the care, friendliness and attention shown by staff is outstanding and the location and views are perfect. Peace and perfect tranquillity, with lovely (perhaps old-fashioned) style. And delicious food served in a beautiful dining room. |
|||
Tips for other travellers We felt no need to seek a local restaurant, because the food was so lovely at the hotel. We did the walk (just the short version) but the flagged up dangerous cliffs are certainly that – care required and not for the nervous. The hotel’s information suggests many interesting trips and visits. We went to Threave House and Gardens which were gorgeous. Kirkcudbright is a very interesting place to visit (known for the Glasgow Boys…and Girls). We know it well, so did not visit this time. |

Comments about this property Beautifully located, this was a lovely place to escape to for a child-free weekend. The room was clean and comfortable with a great view and nice little touches, like fruit and chocolates. The food was outstanding, from the canapes and amazingly tender beef at dinner, to the porridge, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs at breakfast. There was a great selection and the chef obviously used quality ingredients. The service was excellent too, we were made to feel very welcome. The hotel is a great base for exploring the area, we hope to visit again in the future. |

Comments about this property Thank you for letting me resubmit…. Your hotel is a juwel and we will certainly come back. Tips? Comments about this property Excellent as usual. The only slight improvement would be if dinner were a little slower, we like to have a drink or glass of wine with canapes then maybe order another bottle of wine for the main course however don’t think we had always got the first drink before going into the dining room and then the courses were quite quick. Otherwise as I said everything excellent and looking forward to visiting again |

Comments about this property The hotel sits in a beautiful position and the food served here is wonderful. The staff are very friendly and the service given is exceptional.The attention to detail is very good and you are made to feel very welcome here. If you want peace and tranquility then this is the place to come. |
|||
Tips for other travellers There are a couple of local walks here the one to Rosscarrel is stunning, we turned back from the clifftop path as it became a bit to scary and dangerous but you can cut go the other route and still go over some of the cliff paths at a more secure area. To find somewhere other than the hotel to eat you would have to drive, we dined in the hotel both evenings. |

Comments about this property Ideal if you just want to get away from everything and sample well cooked local food. The evening meals and breakfast were good quality and value for money with decent sized portions. Extensive wine list to complement the food and not overpriced. |
|||
Tips for other travellers This hotel is remote and just ideal for exploring the coast on foot. We did travel into Kirkcudbright and Castle Douglas which were a short drive away but for a weekend I would just stay close to hotel as nowhere else lived up to the standard of hospitality found at Balcary Bay. |

Comments about this property This was our third stay at the hotel this year, which gives you some idea of how we rate the place. The proprietors certainly know how to run a hotel, which is why the numbers for occupancy rate and repeat guests are so high. The best hotel we stay in! |

Comments about this property Enjoyed the latest stay. Service really is excellent. The one possible negative I would say is that my Mum and Dad were in room 21 and my Mum felt a little uncomfortable in the bathroom when it was dark outside because the window was frosted with a net curtain. She would have felt more comfortable with a proper curtain at the window. Small thing. |

I also enjoyed Balcary Bay and our time spent in the hotel. |

Comments about this property Great place to “get away from it all” – peaceful and restful. Very comfortable room. Excellent meals. Friendly, helpful and attentive staff. Recommended to us by “word of mouth” and we were not disappointed! |

Tips for other travellers Good base from which to visit places like Castle Douglas, including Threave NTS property with its beautiful gardens and estate, and Kirkcudbright with its many “art” locations including Broughton House, another NTS property. Lots of good quality cafes – didn’t need to use restaurants, however; if we lived nearby we’d probably dine at the hotel! |

Comments about this property Once again an enjoyable stay. Standard of the hotel bedroom and public rooms is excellent as is the food and service. Seeing Graeme, the owner, around at all times is indicative of the care he shows to ensure all aspects of the hotel are to the satisfaction of the guests. |
|||
Tips for other travellers The location of the hotel on the beach gives ample opportunity for walks. A number of gardens are nearby. There is no need to look for restaurants in the area as the food at Balcary Bay is excellent with a different menu each evening. Breakfasts are ample with plenty of choice including local specialities such as Arbroath Smokies. |

Comments about this property Room 9 very clean, tastefully decorated, beds comfortable, bath and shower good. Room has a garden view which is west facing so has the evening sunshine. Comfortable lounge and conservatory with super view. Restaurant waitresses were attendant, cheerful and polite. Food on both evenings and breakfasts were excellent with sufficient quantity good balance and varied choice, cooked to perfection. This chef knows his business nothing pretentious, quality food very well presented. House wine pretty good. Overall a very good experience in a comfortable hotel where everything seems to be spot on. |

Comments about this property Thank you so much to management and ALL staff for a wonderful stay. You have a very comfortable hotel with excellent food in an amazing location. The only small criticism we have is the lack of comfortable seating & tables outside overlooking the bay. This will certainly not deter us from returning! We look forward to seeing you again. |

Comments about this property We enjoyed our 3 night stay very much. Every course of the dinner each night was beautifully presented and tasted wonderful. The staff are helpful. The lounge and bar are attractive places to spend time in, and the conservatory is a good place to just sit and watch the view of Balcary Bay. |
|||
Tips for other travellers Kirkcudbright and Castle Douglas are both worth a visit. I also like Kippford and Rockcliff on the other side of Balcary Bay. Slightly further away, the Galloway Forest Park is almost uninhabited, there are not many visitors, and it is different from anywhere else in Scotland. |

Comments about this property An excellent stay in every respect – however there may be merit in offering guests a less rich (simpler) dinner option. After two days of fine dining we probably would have liked a bistro type meal as an option had we been staying three nights. |

Comments about this property We stayed in Room 2. Two window Views. One over Balcary bay, you are also looking across the roof of the conservatory but this does not hinder your view. The second window gives partial views to the west of the bay. Staff were very polite and courteous but not over the top. We stayed for Breakfast and Dinner, superb !. |
|||
Tips for other travellers Ideal location to visit historic sites such as Sweetheart Abbey, the castles of Thrieve or Caerlaverock etc. if the weather is favourable, the walk from the Hotel to the cliffs are worthwhile but it must be noted that the path is slightly narrow at the top of the cliffs so best avoided if you are not sure footed. There is an alternate route avoiding the cliffs. We saw a Perigrine Falcon on one of our walks there, plus Razor Bills, guillemots , linnets etc |

Comments about this property The hotel was excellent. Beautiful setting, well appointed en suite bedroom and spacious amount of communal sitting rooms with splendid views of the Solway Firth.Only downside was lack of mobile coverage, though I was told Vodaphone the best and wi-fi only available in the lounge area. Location is about 10 miles from Kirkcubright. A lovely little town. |
|||
Tips for other travellers Although we were only there for two nights and did not have time to eat out or explore we thought we had plenty of reason to want to return as interesting places around that we would like to visit. As it was in Kirkcubright we visited Broughton House and garden, ‘Glasgow Boy’artist’s House which we found worth a visit and a number of other galleries/ museums in the town. Also Dundrennan Abbey where Glyn gave us a well -informed talk on it’s history. The countryside is also lovely for touring. |

Comments about this property Very relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings. Magnificent views from hotel. Staff very attentive but not intrusive. Some of our party are vegetarians and the chef accommodated our needs superbly with multiple choices instead of the usual “vegetarian option” in other hotels. It would be helpful to have wi-fi in the bedrooms. A grab rail in the shower would help older guests to stay safe whilst showering. |

Tips for other travellers The Clience Studio, art gallery, Castle Douglas, is well worth a visit with the artist, Angela Lawrence, in attendance. We bought a painting but there are lots of inexpensive items such as prints, cards, fridge magnets etc. showing her paintings which make lovely mementos |

Comments about this property We have enjoyed another short break at Balcary Bay Hotel. Room 21 was excellent. All the meals were excellent. The standard of food is exceptional. Thanks to all the staff for their friendly and efficient service. |

Tips for other travellers We had a light lunch at The Selkirk Arms in Kirkcudbright which is well worth a visit. Lovely garden area where we could sit with our dog. Food was first class. There is so much to do in Dumfries & Galloway and having been visiting the area for over 30 years we still find places to visit that are new to us but also return to old favourites. |

Comments about this property This was our first visit as we had read about it in a magazine and thought it sounded like our kind of hotel-we were not disappointed. The view from room 8 was splendid and the bathroom extremely spacious. We hope this will not be our only visit. It was nice on our first night to be offered gluten free canapés and petit fours. |

Tips for other travellers Don’t be put off by the 2mile narrow road in to the hotel. In Castle Douglas there are lots of very good eating places and lovely shops with friendly staff. |
